Yet much of experimental ecology still relies on simplified designs, single stressors, and a limited set of model organisms. As a result, we often lack a general, mechanistic understanding of how organisms respond to environmental change across ecosystems, taxa, and levels of biological organisation.<\/span><\/p><div><p><strong>DARE<\/strong> (<strong>D<\/strong>istributed <strong>A<\/strong>quatic <strong>R<\/strong>esponse <strong>E<\/strong>xperiments) is a global, community\u2011driven experimental initiative inspired our perspective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-60470-5\">Sasaki, Isanta\u2011Navarro &amp; Govaert (2025)<\/a>. DARE directly responds to our call for experimental ecology that balances realism and feasibility by scaling up collaboration rather than complexity within single labs.<\/p><p>Our overarching goal is to identify general patterns in organismal performance across environmental gradients, and to link these patterns to broad ecological concepts\u2014such as body\u2011size rules, life\u2011history strategies, and performance trade\u2011offs\u2014across the full aquatic continuum.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-433928d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"433928d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><span style=\"text-align: start\">\ud83e\uddec<\/span>The Idea <span style=\"text-align: start\">\ud83d\udd2c<\/span><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-90356d0 e-con-full e-flex elementor-invisible e-con e-child\" data-id=\"90356d0\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a90c642 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"a90c642\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf09da3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cf09da3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>The Big Picture and Scientific Motivation<\/h3><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">DARE is built around one central idea: many small, well\u2011designed experiments, coordinated across systems and regions, can collectively reveal large\u2011scale ecological patterns that no individual study can detect alone.<\/div><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">Rather than focusing on absolute trait values, DARE emphasizes relative responses and effect sizes\u2014how much performance changes along environmental gradients, and how those changes compare across organisms and ecosystems. By doing so, we aim to move beyond system\u2011specific results towards generalizable insights into how environmental conditions shape organismal performance.<\/div><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">This approach allows us to:<\/div><ul class=\"\"><li class=\"scriptor-listItemlist!list-6817e8ac-7990-4573-8c8a-8d8ccfb8f4740\">Embrace ecological diversity rather than standardizing it away<\/li><li class=\"scriptor-listItemlist!list-6817e8ac-7990-4573-8c8a-8d8ccfb8f4740\">Work across freshwater, brackish, and marine systems<\/li><li class=\"scriptor-listItemlist!list-6817e8ac-7990-4573-8c8a-8d8ccfb8f4740\">Integrate results across taxa, life histories, and levels of organization<\/li><li class=\"scriptor-listItemlist!list-6817e8ac-7990-4573-8c8a-8d8ccfb8f4740\">Maintain experimental feasibility while increasing realism at the network scale<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72cdf86 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"72cdf86\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>What Is the Experiment About?<\/h3><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">At its core, DARE focuses on organismal performance under environmental gradients.<\/div><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">Participants will expose their study organism(s) to one or more environmental stress gradients of:<\/div><ul class=\"\"><li class=\"scriptor-listItemlist!list-6817e8ac-7990-4573-8c8a-8d8ccfb8f4741\">Temperature<\/li><li class=\"scriptor-listItemlist!list-6817e8ac-7990-4573-8c8a-8d8ccfb8f4741\">Salinity<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\"><div>Participation is possible with either (i) a fully factorial experiment including low and high treatment levels, or (ii) a partially factorial experiment in which a single environmental gradient is applied.<\/div><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><h3>Response variables<\/h3><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">DARE is intentionally flexible. You choose the response that best captures performance in your organism, for example:<\/div><ul class=\"\"><li class=\"scriptor-listItemlist!list-6817e8ac-7990-4573-8c8a-8d8ccfb8f4742\">Growth rates<\/li><li class=\"scriptor-listItemlist!list-6817e8ac-7990-4573-8c8a-8d8ccfb8f4742\">Body size or size distributions<\/li><li welcome.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><h3>A Distributed, Multi\u2011Taxon Approach<\/h3><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">DARE is explicitly designed as a distributed experiment, spanning:<\/div><ul class=\"scriptor-listItemlist!list-6817e8ac-7990-4573-8c8a-8d8ccfb8f4743\">Microbes, primary producers, invertebrates, and vertebrates<\/li><li class=\"scriptor-listItemlist!list-6817e8ac-7990-4573-8c8a-8d8ccfb8f4743\">Model and non\u2011model organisms<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\"><strong>There is no single \u201cDARE
